Pastor Troy Schmidt

Senior Pastor

tschmidt@glctempe.net

My job is to:
I feel my job is to awaken and equip the local church to maximize it’s kingdom impact and am blessed that God has called me to do that at Gethsemane.

I love my job because:
I enjoy the challenge of leading a complex ministry like Gethsemane and having the opportunity to be a part of what God’s people are doing in this community.

Background:
I received my bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science from Concordia University, Austin TX in 1999. In 2004, I graduated with a Master’s of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO.

Upon graduation from Seminary, I received my first call to serve as an associate pastor at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Houston, TX. During the four and a half years I served there, I was involved in everything from leading our network of nearly 100 small groups to being the campus pastor of our League City campus.

In 2008, I received the call to be Senior Pastor at Gethsemane and have been serving here ever since.

A Bible verse I turn to time and time again is:
Psalm 139 (www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+139) has always been important to me.

Early on in ministry, I feel that God used it to encourage me to be the pastor He had wired me to be and place my trust and confidence in what He is doing. I often turn to this Psalm for encouragement and strength.

Something fun you don’t know about me is:
I golf for fun, run and bike for exercise, cook to relax, and enjoy the company of good friends and family.

I love my job because:
I am most thankful that my position at Gethsemane allows me to share God's love in Jesus with folks, lead them in growing in their faith and understanding of Scripture and generally support and encourage folks as the Holy Spirit guides them in their spiritual journey.

Background:
Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia Senior College, Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Ordained into the pastoral office in 1972. Served congregations in Kansas, Illinois and Colorado. Served as Director of the Department of Evangelism for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod from 1994-1999. Served as Mission Developer for the Pacific Southwest District from 1999 to 2009. Upon retiring from the District position I joined the Gethsemane staff in my part time position in September of 2009.

A Bible verse I turn to time and time again is:
“Finally, brothers (and sisters), whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8
There is so much in our world and in us that would have us focus on things that don't honor God or encourage people. In God's grace I strive to keep my focus on that which God can use to build us up.
